Ancient Merv – UNESCO World Heritage
Ancient Merv is surrounded by the Karakum Desert within modern Turkmenistan. The site has over 4,000 years of history. The archeological remains are internationally important and have been recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The walled defenses and monuments of these multiple abandoned cities are made of earth, most of which are in danger of erosion and collapse. The threats to the site have caused it to be listed by the World Monuments Fund Watch list.
